Neither a future nor funds for mesothelioma sufferers.
PM rejects bid to cut cancer drug cost.
PRIME Minister John Howard has refused to support a push by asbestos disease sufferers to subsidise the only drug available to treat mesothelioma.
Mr Howard has instead told the Asbestos Diseases Foundation that mesothelioma sufferers should go to their state governments for help to buy the drug, which costs $20,000 per treatment cycle.
About 600 Australians are diagnosed every year with mesothelioma, a fatal cancer caused by exposure to asbestos.
A RECORD federal budget surplus of $17.3 billion for the last financial year has raised expectations that this year’s surplus will be larger than expected – freeing billions more for election pledges.
The 2006-07 surplus figure, announced yesterday [ Aug 21] by the Treasurer, Peter Costello, was $3.7 billion higher than the $13.6 billion forecast in the May budget.
